Dumbshit Dept.

Super Bowl parties with 55" TVs or larger deemed illegal by the NFL

I think the NFL has got a case of over inflated self worth and is shaking down churches in Indiana that were planning to show the game on a big screen TV:

The issue came to light Thursday when the Star reported that the NFL had told Fall Creek Baptist Church in Indianapolis that its plans for a Super Bowl watch party in front a big screen TV would be illegal.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday the league stands by its interpretation of copyright law and would look into any violators that comes to the league’s attention. The main concern for the league, Aiello said, is groups that charge admission to watch games and those that use a TV screen larger than 55 inches to show the game.

I'd like to know on what basis they are claiming this. I know you can't willy-nilly invite hundreds of people or charge money for a super bowl party. Its a case of public performance vs private performance, and I can't see how the NFL would claim there is a restriction on TV size for a private performance. Sounds like the NFL lawyers are bunch of jack-asses that are overstepping their copyrights.

UPDATE: Looks like they realized that they can't do this and are now admitting its ok.
