Music industry watch

Physical DRM

As time passes I keep hoping that the record companies will finally start getting clued in that DRM does not work and that consumers don't want to hassle with DRM. Its obvious from my perspective.

But not from theirs. In the latest laughable effort to prevent prerelease Tori Amos and Perl Jam CDs from showing up on the file trading networks before the CD is actually released, Epic Records takes DRM to a physical level. Epic bought 300 Sony CD Walkman and then proceeded to insert the preview CDs and GLUE THEM SHUT. The player also featured a set of headphones that were permanently glued to the player.

The morons at Epic never considered that you could dismantle the CD player by unscrewing the base plate and then simply pop the CD out of the player. Or that you could cut the headphones off and then connect the player to your stereo.

This is a perfect example of how DRM does not work, and how the record companies are making fools of themselves for even trying to protect their content.
